Data Science student Dries reinforced the Machine Learning team during a 1-month summer internship. His mission? Working on a Machine Learning project with Vertex AI. In this article, Dries will break down the experience of his Machine Learning internship, and tell you everything he learned along the way.

How I Kicked off my Summer Internship
My first contact with the company was through the student organization of my faculty, VTK. They organized an internship fair where companies had the chance to present themselves. Afterwards, students could have a private chat with the employees. I was immediately attracted by the presentation of Devoteam G Cloud. To me, it was clear that they offered exactly what I was looking for: learn more about machine learning and work together with an enthusiastic team. I’m personally fascinated by the power of computers combined with some abstract mathematics. For this reason, I am very interested in machine learning and cryptography.
I started my summer internship at the beginning of August. I volunteered to work at Devoteam G Cloud for one month because I was looking for more practical experience. It was exciting to finally apply some of the theories I learned during my bachelor’s as a computer science engineer.

Rewarding an educational
During my internship, I learned a lot about Google Cloud Platform.
“Google Cloud’s platform is full of handy features to ease the life of a data scientist. It has excellent integrations, world-class security, and an impressive global network.”
With the platform, I had my first glimpse at how big corporations handle large amounts of data using the cloud.
While working with the Vertex AI platform, I came in contact with the advantages of using pipelines to create more complex MLops workflows. This was my first time learning about the combination of machine learning and Devops.
This practical know-how was just what I was missing during my studies.
What’s next?
The experience from this internship will definitely help with choosing the right masters programme. I look forward to finishing my studies and afterwards work at a dynamic company such as Devoteam G Cloud.

I can recommend all my fellow students to also tackle this challenge. Internships offer a fun way to learn a lot.
