Meet Marcus, lead consultant Google Workspace

In this series, we put the spotlight on Devoteam G Cloud’s experts who are always at the forefront of driving progress in the exciting and rapidly-evolving Google Cloud world. In this article, you’ll meet Marcus Hampel, Lead Consultant Google Workspace at Devoteam G Cloud in Germany. His main responsibility is to help businesses implement Google Workspace.

My name is Marcus Hampel. I work for Devoteam G Cloud in Germany. My role is to drive client success with Google Workspace through consulting, implementation, and relationship building.
Change Management is a big part of this mission.

My day involves a mix of client interaction, project work, and professional development. It often starts by aligning with the team, then attending meetings with clients, followed by solo tasks like executing plans and report creation. Collaboration with colleagues and client follow-ups round out the workday, with dedicated time for staying current in my field.

In a recent project, I guided a call centre to implement Google Workspace. The key challenge was ensuring minimal disruption to their core business, which relied heavily on phone support. To address this, we collaboratively developed a change plan based on the Google Customer Success Methodology for Google Workspace. This framework provided the flexibility needed for agile decision-making throughout the process. By leveraging this approach, we not only met the go-live deadline but also successfully converted the call centre’s internal strengths of team play into a multiplier effect.  This involved capitalising on their existing expertise for communication, training, and encouraging the adoption of new work behaviours.  As a result, the transition to Google Workspace was smooth and empowered the call centre to operate even more efficiently. Change management as I like it.

What are the most challenging aspects of your job as a Lead Consultant, and how do you overcome them?

In Germany, companies still continue to rely on established on-premises legacy systems. However, cloud-based solutions like Google Workspace can offer significant benefits for all businesses. So the key to driving change often lies in showcasing successful migration examples and allowing companies to experience the solutions firsthand.  A well-crafted prototype tailored to a specific company process can be the spark that ignites their migration and transformation journey. Accompanied by a robust change program you gain the necessary trust and confidence.

How would you describe your Tribe team? How do you move together?

Even though the Tribe is placed across Europe, it feels very much like a close-knit team. This is thanks to our open-minded colleagues and our proficient use of collaborative platforms.  Our team truly embodies the collaborative spirit we promote to our clients.  Beyond delivering projects together, we actively share knowledge, experiences, and results, thus creating a continuous learning environment.  It’s a fantastic team to work in, I can assure you!

How would you describe the Devoteam G Cloud Team?

My team embraces new challenges and is responsive to any need. This makes a highly collaborative environment where customer ideas, requests, and needs are addressed quickly and professionally. Everyone is committed to delivering high-quality work, and this sense of purpose contributes to a positive and productive atmosphere. It’s fun!

How do you collaborate with other teams or departments within Devoteam G Cloud?

We have well-defined processes and tools in place. For example, our different cloud teams are organised in sub-teams around topics like security or containerization and technologies, which are relevant for many customers and cloud vendors. This collaborative approach ensures that our solutions complement each other and provide customers with the best possible options.  Furthermore, giving diverse perspectives is essential – after all, we’re consultants first and resellers second. This means we prioritise providing clients with the best solutions for their needs, not just pushing specific products.

Why did you choose a career as a consultant for a Cloud productivity platform?

I truly enjoy the variety and challenge that IT consulting offers.  When done well, IT consulting can have a significant positive impact on a client’s business.  Your work is highly visible to the customer, and you can see the positive changes your solutions create.  The fast-paced environment is intellectually stimulating. There’s always something new to learn and discover,  and these discoveries can lead to solutions that have a real impact on a client’s needs.  Finally, I also enjoy using the IT platforms that I consult on – it allows me to stay current with the latest technologies.

How do you set the pace in your job?

I manage my workload by collaborating with my team to prioritise tasks, utilising time management techniques like scheduling and goal setting.  I also dedicate focus time to minimise distractions and maximise productivity.  Through continuous learning and adaptation, I refine my approach to ensure efficiency.  Finally, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential for sustaining anybody’s performance.

Go Big: what does it mean to you?

A cultural shift takes place.  You may encounter an environment with siloed teams, a fragmented IT landscape, or legacy systems in need of modernization.  A significant success factor is when clients embrace complete transparency. This means all topics are openly discussed, and they take a holistic approach, considering not just the IT perspective but also aspects like work style, responsibility, and collaboration. They want and start to life everyday change management. This cultural shift is the big thing.

One example of going big: I worked for a semiconductor manufacturer. One might assume they already embrace a modern work style due to the industry’s relative youth and age. However, they were surprised at how much more Google Workspace facilitated and improved collaboration and communication within their teams.

My job in 1 sentence? … it’s all about customer success, change, collaboration and Google Workspace

What is the best thing about your job?

It’s always the best thing to see structures changing for the better.  Since 2011, I’ve worked extensively with Google Workspace and in related projects. What truly excites me is customers sharing their favourite aspects of the implementation process, go-live experiences, and ongoing learnings. For instance, one client using the Google Customer Success Methodology was impressed to see it foster a culture of open communication and breaking down the silo mentality within their teams. A good basis to grow even more!
